چکیده

HE PURPOSE OF THE PRESENT REVIEW of the literature is an examination of the contemporary data on the clinical diagnostic value of the determination of the 17-ketosteroid content in the urine in various disorders of the endocrine glands. The basis of the chemical structure of the 17-ketosteroids is the perhydrocyclopentanophenanthrene ring. The 17-ketosteroids can be looked upon as derivatives of two hydrocarbons: androstane and etiocholane, which are distinguished from each other by the steric configuration around the fifth carbon atom. The 17-ketosteroids have a keto group at carbon atom number 17 of the given hydrocarbons. This makes possible their colorimetric determination by means of the Zimmerman color reaction (1951). At the present time, more than 48 isomers of the 17-ketosteroids are known. The most important of these, which are present in the

Urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids in children.

Determination of the urinary excretion of 1 7-ketosteroids (17-oxosteroids) is the most important laboratory test in the investigation of endocrine disorders involving the adrenal cortex and gonads in children. The normal range of excretion varies with the method employed, since non-steroidal pigment may to a greater or lesser degree be measured as 17-ketosteroid. It is important therefore to k...

Quantitative paper chromatography of conjugated 17-ketosteroids in plasma.

The determination of urinary 17-ketosteroids has limited applications in the understanding and diagnosis of the nature of endocrine disorders associated with mild hirsutism and virilism in the female, because a very large number of these patients excretes 17-ketosteroids well within the normal range. Recent experience of Finkelstein, Forchielli and Dorfman (1) suggests that in these cases the b...

The effect of intravenously-administered ACTH on plasma 17,21-dihydroxy-20-ketosteroids in normal individuals and in patients with disorders of the adrenal cortex.

The response of the adrenal cortex to exogenous ACTH has been recognized as one of the more specific and quantitative tests of adrenal function (1). Changes in the 24-hour excretion values of urinary 17-ketosteroids and 17-hydroxycorticosteroids during ACTH administration have proved to be valuable indices of adrenocortical capacity (2, 3). With the development of technics for the chemical esti...

Method for screening urinary steroids by gas chromatography.

Numerous methods are available for measuring urinary steroids in evaluating endocrine dysfunctions. Measurements of these particular steroids, or groups of them, usually involve tedious isolation methods, corrections for interferences and losses of the steroid, and (or) expensive reagents. We show how gas-liquid chromatography provides a rapid, sensitive, and direct method for several steroid m...

The Effect of Inherited Factors, the Milk Agent, and Physio logical State on Phosphorus Metabolism of Endocrine Glands of Mice*t

It has been amply demonstrated that at least three factors—inherited susceptibility, a hormonal influence, and the milk agent—are concerned with the development of spontaneous mammary car cinomas in mice (3). Information on the mecha nisms of action of these factors is, however, inade quate. Aub, Karnofsky, and Towne (2) found no difference in the urinary excretion of estrogens and 17-ketos...
